CACDP Level 1
Certificate in British Sign Language (BSL)
Aims
This qualification is designed to enable learners to communication with Deaf people in
British Sign Language on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use.
Objectives
At the end of the qualification, learners will be able to:
• Understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL
• Take part in simple, predictable conversations in BSL
• Give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL
• Give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL
Structure
The qualification is divided into 3 units: each way can be achieved separately. Candidates who are new to BSL should cover the Introductory Unit 101, then following as Units 102 and 103 build on this knowledge.
To achieve the full Level 1 Certificate in BSL, candidates are required to pass all units.
Unit 101. Introduction to BSL
Unit 102. Conversational BSL
Unit 103. BSL at School, College or Work
Course Duration
The course duration is 25 weeks but tailor-made course can be arranged either 15 weeks (one full day a week), a weekend Course (2 Days a month)
or a 4 weeks course( 4 full days a week)
Course provider
All course contents, including BSL materials and handouts about ‘The Deaf Community and its Culture’ shall be provided by ‘SIGNteach’. On completion of the course, ‘SIGNteach’ shall provide all candidates with an evaluation form for their own keeping.
Assessments
Unit 101 will be assessed by the tutor. Unit 102 and 103 will be externally assessed by CACDP assessor.
