CACDP Level 2
Certificate in British Sign Language (BSL)
Aims
To develop functional communication skills in British Sign Language through tasks which resemble the real life experience of people who meet and mix with Deaf people in their family, social or working lives.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course candidates should be able to:
• Participate in a conversation using sign language without frequent repetition or misunderstanding
• Demonstrate an appropriate selection of vocabulary and grammatical principles
• Convey information clearly and accurately
• Understand a signed narrative without major omissions or inaccuracies
• Respond accurately to signed questions relating to a signed narrative
• Describe the content of a sequence of pictures using sign language
• Demonstrate a range of vocabulary clearly and accurately
• Demonstrate a selection of grammatical principles clearly and accurately.
Structure
The qualification is divided into 3 units: each way can be achieved separately. Candidates who have passed BSL Level 1, can go to Unit 201, then following as Units 202 and 203 build on this knowledge
Course Duration
The course duration is 48 weeks but with tailor-made course can be arranged either 24 weeks (one full day a week), or a weekend Course (2 days a month)
Course provider
All course contents, including BSL materials and handouts about ‘The Deaf Community and its Culture’ shall be provided by ‘Signteach’. On completion of the course, ‘Signteach’ shall provide all candidates with an evaluation form for their own keeping.
To achieve the full Level 2 Certificate in BSL, candidates are required to pass all units
Unit 201. Receptive Skills Unit 202. Productive Skills Unit 203. Conversational Skills
Assessments
Unit 201, 202 and 203 will be externally assessed by CACDP assessor
