T101 - Communication Tactics

with Deaf and Deafblind People

Aims
This courses covers basic skills for communicating with deaf or deafblind people.  You will be able
to understand how and when a range of tactics can be used to communicate with deaf and deafblind
people.

The course length is still to be confirmed but is likely to be 10 learning hours with an assessment
given by the tutor and externally moderated by CACDP. You will need to achieve both units for the
full qualification. Candidates who do not need both units can claim a QCA accredited certificate from
CACDP for the unit they achieve.  Units may be taken separately and in any order.  Dates, costs and
venue are in the process of being planned and we will update this website as soon as we have the
details.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course candidates should be able to:

- Respond appropriately to the fact that a deaf person could have any degree of hearing loss and
could consider themselves either hard of hearing, deafened or a BSL user
- seat themselves in a suitable position for effective communication with a deaf person
- explain what steps can be taken if a deaf person is not understood
- demonstrate an ability to use a range of tactics that will allow effective communication with
D/deaf person


Assessment
There is a single assessment component. A 10 minute practical assessment of the candidates’s ability
to use a range of basic tactics for clear communication with deaf people. The assessment is carried
out by an approval CACDP assessor.

Course Duration
The Course duration is 10 hours but with tailor-made course can be arranged either 2 full consecutive

Course Provider
All Contents, including BSL materials and handouts about 'The Deaf Community and its Culture' shall be
provided by 'SIGNteach'. On completion of the course, 'SIGNteach' shall provide all candidates with an
evaluation form for their own keeping.


Venue
We can only offer this tailor-made course to companies / organisations / individual that have a minimum
8 or more candidates for the course.

Training will be provided in-house at your company/organisation.


The course is tailor-made to run over 2 consecutive days.
